Modernity with a glimpse of nostalgia

lola.psd is a comedy short film produced by Colby Mercado. It was a film that will give you a roller coaster of emotions, and a pinch of fun and a GenZ vibe, where the grandmother still strive on using social media platform in example of TikTok that will make her a GenZ vibe 'Lola' who likes to keep up with the current generation of technology and internet that made her cool and unsusual despite of her age. A story that focuses on two main characters; a fifteen-year-old graphic designer who lived with his stubborn grandmother and help her with the black-and-white photos to have a brightful color again by digitally fixing it—memories were found and it became their bond.

Poster

I first saw this film while scrolling on Youtube, which is a platform they uploaded. Their film poster on the thumbnail made me curious to watch it. 

It was a poster that will introduce you to the inside of their story. In making a film poster,  just like lola.psd we need to give a glimpse of a story that we want to give to the audience and this film executes this move and shows different sides of a film style in our current generation.

Cinematography

In cinematography, different angles and techniques were taken on this film—giving substance of the lenses, filters, lighting, and camera movements. lola.psd encompasses the art within it, as well as showing the culture of Filipino through cinematography.  Symbolism was also shown through cinematography. A type of essential element in film. 

From the picture above was a type of camera angle (overhead shot with a slight touch of dutch angle), this angle can narrate a whole story and its perfect location, integrating the background that correlates on showing the culture such as the curtain, family picture frame and the couch with different pattern of a pillow cover. 

SFX and Editing

The film showed a techiness film, which is a different type of genre I encountered. The story and the editing correlates with each other, Showing the point of view of the grandson as a graphic designer. It will revolve you with the creativity of their editing. 

Script

The scriptline involves modernity and relatable lines for today’s generation. They also inputs the common grandmother and grandson relationship in the script but in the touch of witty and comedic output. 

“How would you like me to reach you instead? Gusto mo sa Zoom? sa Telegram? sa Omegle o kaya sa Pocketbell? kung alam mo yun” a modernity touch of line in which was spilled by the character of a grandmother that tackles that modernity and technology are for all despite of the age. 

Musical score

Musical score is also an essential element in making film, and lola.psd is a perfect example of involving musical score with their film; it is also an element that tells emotions to the audience—accompanying the whole film . “Tindahan ng mga alaala” by Ian Quiruz was their song choice and for me it is a piece that relies on the sentiments and warmth of the film.

lola.psd is a local film of today’s generation that involves different timelines and nostalgia. Showing the filipino culture with the art of modernity that will surely snuck to filipinos heart.
